Recently I was contacted for an interview by Mark Torrender, the founder of the Talk Beliefs YouTube channel, which is dedicated to exploring the stories of survivors of religious sects and cults. The goal of Talk Beliefs is altruistic: by sharing one’s story, you can help other survivors and hopefully enact change. Which is basically why I am vocal. As Audre Lord wrote, “Your silence will not protect you.”
Mark’s interest in cults stems from a traumatic childhood experience at a Christian camp. He began his channel in 2015 with the goal of getting people to explore what they believe and to challenge people about their beliefs. Since then he has interviewed Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Hare Krishnas, and children who grew up in cults. He has begun a series on religious boot camps in the United States. You can view this playlist here.
He recently posted this interview with Marsha Metz, who has been very active in speaking out against New Horizons Youth Ministries/ Escuela Caribe.
I’m currently watching his interview with David Wernsman, who was featured in the Escuela Caribe documentary, Kidnapped for Christ.
Librarian to the core, I generally always would rather be reading, but I am really looking forward to watching this interview with one of my heroes, Jodi Hobbs, founder of Survivors of Institutional Abuse. Back when I was first writing, knowing this organization existed and utilizing their resources was super empowering.
My interview will be out soon. Will keep you posted!
