Hard Time in a Christian Boot Camp

Last week my interview with Mark Torrender of Talk Beliefs was published. We discussed what it was like to spend my teen years in a supposedly “Christian” boot camp in the Dominican Republic.

I’m a private person. It’s strange to give these interviews, but I keep on with it because it is wrong that people are allowed to abuse kids in the name of religion. Places like Escuela Caribe are abusive and consequently often cause life long damages to the individual. It’s wrong that parents are allowed to send their kids away to places like this without their consent. It’s wrong that schools like Escuela Caribe, now Crosswinds, stay unregulated because our politicians refuse to regulate these schools. And I’ll stop there before this devolves into a rant about how as a Gen X woman, I’m reminded on a daily basis that this is not the world I signed up for.

However I think Mark Torrendor, Zoe Schlanger, Theresa Rosado, Kate Logan, and the other people who have interviewed me about Escuela Caribe are amazing. Because my silence doesn’t protect me or anyone else. I really appreciate Mark’s time, and the time of everyone who has helped me figure out how to tell my story. I’d love to hear what you think of the video in the comments.
