Won’t Get Fooled Again # Crosswinds

This photo was taken in 2006 near the Escuela Caribe campus in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic.

I began this blog in 2008 because I wanted people to understand that teens sent to treatment facilities are often traumatized in the name of therapy. I know, because I was traumatized. It took me 10 years before I could discuss the abuse.

I began this blog after I traveled to my teen treatment facility,  Escuela Caribe.  I traveled to the DR in 2006. I went there with my husband. 15 years after I graduated, I discovered that students were still being abused.

In 2011, I celebrated the closing of Escuela Caribe and New Horizons Youth Ministries. I did not celebrate for long.  Soon after, my fellow alumni and I discovered that the DR and IN facilities operated by New Horizons Youth Ministries were being taken over by Crosswinds/ Lifeline, an Indiana-based teen treatment program. For some time my fellow alumni and I have suspected that Crosswinds was another iteration of Escuela Caribe/ New Horizons Youth Ministries.   We suspected that we were witnessing a repeat of history. A similar name change was made by the organization in 1983, when, after a Congressional investigation, Caribe Vista School became Escuela Caribe.

Recently a friend unearthed New Horizons Youth Ministries’ 2011 990.  Lifeline CEO Mark Terrell signed the return as director of New Horizons Youth Ministries.  This directly repudiates Terrell’s claim that he was not involved with New Horizons Youth Ministries.  It refutes Crosswinds’ claim that they are a different school.

People often email and ask if they should be worried that someone they love was sent to the DR facility.  I would be.  This organization has a 40 year documented history of abuse.
